Freedom from prison marks a new beginning, but returning home is only the first step. Many formerly incarcerated men face enormous challenges as they attempt to rebuild relationships, find employment, regain confidence and create stable lives.
Rev. Dr. Roger E. Dixon Sr. has spent 35 years helping men navigate that difficult journey. Through prison ministry, personal mentorship and ongoing follow-up, he encourages incarcerated and returning citizens to develop a spiritual growth mindset rooted in faith, responsibility and purpose.
“This is my passion and my life’s calling,” Dixon says. “I am here to make a difference in someone’s life.”
A Calling That Began With Service
Dixon’s journey began when he joined Second Chance Ministries as a volunteer 35 years ago. The organization provided the training and hands-on experience that prepared him to work with incarcerated men and support them after their release.
Over the years, Dixon recognized that encouragement inside prison was important, but consistent support after release was essential. Returning citizens often leave structured environments and immediately encounter employment barriers, strained family relationships, financial instability and pressure from their former surroundings.
Dixon and his ministry team remain connected to the men they serve. They provide accountability, encouragement and practical guidance as each man works toward his dreams and goals.
That commitment to follow-up is a defining part of Dixon’s approach.
“Every person who is released from prison needs someone to follow up with them,” he explains. “I have a great team helping me make sure each man can reach his goals.”
Building a Spiritual Growth Mindset
Faith is the foundation of Dixon’s work. His message encourages men to put God first, recognize the value of family and believe they still have the ability to build meaningful lives.
Proverbs 3:5-6 guides that mission: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Dixon believes spiritual growth helps men develop the discipline, confidence and resilience needed to make better decisions. His work is designed to remind returning citizens that incarceration does not have to define the rest of their lives.
His signature message is direct and empowering:
“Success is yours. Own your success. Don’t give it away. Use your ability to achieve everything God has for you, and help others.”
One Man’s Success Creates Another Opportunity
Bro. Rich is one example of the lasting impact of Dixon’s mentorship. Dixon began helping him while he was incarcerated, encouraging him to identify his purpose and pursue goals that would allow him to serve his community.
After his release, Bro. Rich joined Dixon’s ministry team. His story demonstrates how personal transformation can multiply. A man who once needed guidance can eventually become a source of support and encouragement for someone else.
Success, in Dixon’s view, extends beyond avoiding another prison sentence. True restoration means rebuilding families, becoming present and responsible fathers, contributing to the community and helping others move forward.
Families and Communities Benefit From Second Chances
Dixon primarily serves men between the ages of 20 and 40, although he is committed to helping men of all ages who are facing difficult circumstances. His mission also calls upon individuals, churches, businesses and community sponsors to participate in the reentry process.
Returning citizens need more than inspirational words. They need mentors, employment opportunities, training, resources and people willing to believe in their potential.
Dixon understands the challenges of maintaining focus and keeping up with men after their release. He credits his team with helping him remain consistent and effective. His years of service have earned him two community awards and several leadership recognitions, but the changed lives remain his most meaningful accomplishments.
Expanding the Mission
Dixon plans to expand his work throughout the United States and eventually into other parts of the world. His five-year vision includes helping more incarcerated men prepare for successful lives before they return home.
He wants each man to develop a strong relationship with God, reconnect with family, become a blessing to his children and make a positive contribution to the community.
The Citizens Success Academy, Dixon’s online reentry program, is helping advance that vision by providing support and instruction for men preparing to rebuild their lives.
Prison release opens the gate, but restoration requires faith, preparation and a community willing to help. Dixon intends to keep walking beside returning citizens until they recognize their value, claim their purpose and own their success.
