Rubio Cancels South Sudanese Visas, Accusing Nation of Exploitation

Published:

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Saturday that the United States will cancel all visas issued to holders of South Sudanese passports. In a strong statement, Rubio criticized South Sudan’s government for misusing its connection with the United States. He stressed that every nation is obligated to take back its citizens when another country requests their removal.

Along with nullifying current visas, the Department of State will also stop issuing new ones to those traveling on South Sudan passports. This decision targets South Sudan’s transitional government, which has not met international expectations regarding the repatriation of its nationals. The measure reflects growing disapproval of policies adopted by a nation facing significant internal difficulties.

South Sudan has recently experienced sharp unrest as clashes between government forces and opposition groups have escalated. Concerns continue to build over ongoing violence and political disorder in one of the world’s less affluent countries. Last week, United Nations leader Antonio Guterres appealed to regional figures to take steps to prevent further deterioration of the situation following the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar.
