The Inspirational Journey Behind Markeith the Artist
As a child, Woods was drawn to creativity, often finding comfort and identity in painting and drawing. While he explored other interests growing up, art remained his constant—eventually guiding him toward degrees in visual arts, painting, and drawing from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, the Memphis College of Art, and the University of Arkansas Fayetteville.
His artistic practice focuses on introspective painted portraits that restore, illuminate, and expand the narratives of modern Black life. Throughout his career, Woods has been an active contributor to the regional and national art community, exhibiting at institutions including the Agora Gallery in New York City, the Texarkana Regional Arts Council, and the Arkansas Arts Council. A committed educator, he has taught at every level of public education and even served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Morehouse College. Today, he continues teaching in the Dallas area while expanding his artistic footprint.
Overcoming Setbacks and Rising With Purpose
Behind the success of Markeith the Artist is a story of perseverance. After achieving his dream of moving to Atlanta to teach art at the college level, his contract was unexpectedly not renewed, forcing him to relocate to Charlotte. Due to low public school teacher pay, Woods became homeless for a year, sleeping in his car while continuing to create art and remain faithful to his purpose.
Despite these hardships, breakthrough moments followed. After earning his MFA, Woods sold five paintings for $25,000 and secured the opportunity to work with renowned artist Derek Fordjour. These milestones reinforced his belief that every setback is a setup for a major comeback—a philosophy he carries into all areas of life and business.

Looking ahead, Woods aims to secure representation from a major gallery, launch a solo exhibition proving he is one of the greatest living painters, establish a studio in New York, and exhibit his work globally. He is also returning to his roots in higher education, applying for new college-level art professorships.
To aspiring entrepreneurs, his advice is simple yet powerful: never stop believing in your goals—“sometimes you have to go through a minor setback for a major comeback.”
Through prayer, fasting, rest, mentorship, and community engagement, Markeith the Artist continues to elevate not only his craft but the people around him. Confident in his purpose and grounded in faith, he boldly shares: “I’m him and the GOAT—not because of what I’ve done, but because of what I’m about to do.”
