Gerald McBride, a seasoned radio host known for his 45-year tenure in broadcasting and his R&B syndicated radio show, has recently made waves in the film industry with his new movie, The Rhythm. This film, centered on an underdog ice hockey team and their coach in Detroit, is set to make its debut in Rochester, NY, this Friday at Movies 10, with screenings running through March 6.
McBride, a Detroit native, will be present for a Q&A session after the 7:20 p.m. screening on opening night.
The Rhythm tells the inspiring story of a former hockey player who, after serving time in prison, returns to coach an inner-city team, facing and overcoming significant racial and societal challenges. This feature film has already garnered critical acclaim, winning Best Feature Film at The Waco Family and Faith International Film Festival in Waco, Texas.
The festival, which took place at the Lee Lockwood Museum and Library, screened a total of 22 films, all selected for their creativity and compelling storytelling.
The film’s origins trace back 15 years when McBride attended a hockey game and realized the stark lack of African-American presence both on the ice and in the stands. This experience sparked the idea for The Rhythm, which not only entertains but also addresses important social issues with a message of courage and belief in oneself.
“The main character’s journey through adversity to coaching mirrors the broader themes of persistence and faith that are so prevalent in the movie,” said McBride. “It’s a project that was 15 years in the making, and we’re excited to bring it to audiences in Rochester and share this story that is very much rooted in real-life experiences and historical contexts.”
This weekend, the film festival circuit continues to celebrate The Rhythm as a standout example of family and faith-oriented cinema that engages audiences of all ages. McBride’s transition from radio to filmmaking marks a significant milestone in his career, showcasing his diverse talents and commitment to impactful storytelling.
