Dr. Maxine Bryant is on a mission to make sure Black history is not erased, forgotten, or minimized for the next generation. Through her innovative platform, GriotSpeaks and Dr. Maxine Bryant, she is turning storytelling into a movement that educates, empowers, and inspires young people to understand their heritage, value, and greatness.
At the heart of her work is a powerful African proverb:
“Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will be the hero.”
That proverb is more than inspiration for Dr. Bryant. It is the foundation of her purpose.
For too long, history has often been told through incomplete narratives that overlooked the brilliance, contributions, and resilience of Black people. Dr. Bryant believes it is time for the lion to tell the story. Through GriotSpeaks, she is creating engaging ways for young people to reconnect with truth, culture, and identity.
Another symbol deeply connected to her work is the Sankofa Bird, the mythical bird from Ghana that moves forward while looking backward while carrying an egg in its beak, symbolizing the next generation. The meaning of Sankofa is simple yet profound: “Go back and fetch it.”
For Dr. Bryant, that message is critical.
“It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten,” she explains. “Our youth must know their heritage, their value, and their greatness.”
As conversations around Black history continue across the country, Dr. Bryant says her motivation has only intensified. She sees an urgent need to preserve stories, amplify truth, and provide educational tools that affirm identity instead of erasing it.
She often reflects on words from a poem she wrote:
“Our ancestors said, we will emancipate.
Our young people hear the stories and say, we cannot relate.”
Those words fuel her mission every day.
“We cannot tell what we do not know,” she says. “GriotSpeaks is a fun way to learn truth.”
Through her educational board game and storytelling initiatives, Dr. Bryant is helping families, schools, and communities engage with Black history in an interactive and meaningful way. Her vision extends far beyond a traditional board game. With additional funding and support, she plans to expand GriotSpeaks into a mobile app and a fully electronic gaming experience designed for even younger children.
Her goal is simple but transformative: to instill truth, knowledge, confidence, and cultural pride at an early age.
Dr. Bryant understands that representation matters. Stories matter. History matters. And when young people can see themselves reflected in stories of excellence, innovation, leadership, and resilience, it changes how they view themselves and their future.
In a world where narratives shape identity, Dr. Maxine Bryant is making sure the next generation hears the truth loudly, proudly, and unapologetically.
