CJ Dickinson Brings Mental Readiness Training to the Fire Service

Published:

For firefighters, preparation is often measured in tactical readiness, technical skill, and the ability to respond under pressure. Yet as emergency professionals continue facing rising stress, trauma exposure, and split second decision making, a new conversation is gaining urgency within the fire service: how prepared are first responders mentally? Charles J. “CJ” Dickinson II, Battalion Chief, executive coach, and founder of Flashpoint Consulting LLC, believes operational excellence begins with internal readiness. During the recent Metro Atlanta Firefighters Conference, CJ delivered a presentation titled Size Up Within, designed to help firefighters strengthen mental resilience, leadership capacity, and personal performance under pressure.

Held on May 13, 2026, at the Metro Atlanta Firefighters Conference at the Cobb County Fire Training Center in Marietta, Georgia, the session introduced an approach that blends fireground principles with coaching based mental readiness strategies.

Bringing Fireground Thinking to Personal Resilience

In the fire service, a “size up” refers to the rapid assessment firefighters make when arriving at an emergency scene. The process determines risks, priorities, and strategic response in high stakes situations.

CJ challenged attendees to apply that same principle internally.

Through Size Up Within, firefighters were encouraged to evaluate their own mental state, stress levels, decision making habits, and emotional readiness before pressure escalates into burnout or impaired performance. The framework connected operational awareness with personal resilience in ways first responders could immediately understand and apply.

As mental health challenges continue rising among emergency personnel, the presentation addressed a growing need for practical wellness tools rooted in the realities of frontline service rather than abstract theory.

The message resonated because it met firefighters where they already operate: in environments requiring rapid judgment, resilience, and adaptability.

A Career Built in Leadership and Service

CJ’s work is grounded in years of real world emergency services leadership.

As founder of Flashpoint Consulting LLC, he provides leadership development, mental readiness training, coaching, and consulting for first responders and fire service organizations. Founded by a Battalion Chief and certified First Responder Coach, the company focuses on helping agencies strengthen communication, resilience, culture, and performance through practical, experience driven strategies.

Recently, CJ achieved designation as an accredited Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence while also completing the First Responder Coaching Certification Course, further strengthening his leadership and coaching expertise.

Jennifer Anderson, founder and CEO of First Responder Coaching, also played a key role in supporting the broader coaching and development mission behind the work.

Redefining Strength in the Fire Service

For CJ, mental readiness is not separate from operational performance. It is foundational to it.

“Get comfortable being uncomfortable, that is where growth occurs,” CJ says, reflecting a mindset that encourages firefighters to embrace growth through challenge rather than avoid discomfort.

As conversations around first responder wellness continue evolving, CJ’s work highlights an important shift in emergency services culture: resilience is no longer viewed as something firefighters are simply expected to have. It is a skill that can be developed intentionally.
