Super Mario Hits $1 Billion Globally
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Super Mario Bros. Movie is the first movie of the year that has broken the billion dollar mark worldwide. The video game-based movie has grossed an estimated $40m for the Friday-through-Sunday period in the US and Canada, taking its domestic total to $490m. The movie’s earnings overseas have reached $532m and its total global revenue has now reached $1.02b. This is the 10th animated film to ever break the $1 billion mark. This movie is a collaboration between Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination Studios.
The horror film Evil Dead Rise came in second for the second weekend running, with a total of $12.2m. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, a comedy/drama from Gracie Films & Lionsgate Films, came in third place with a $6.8m debut. John Wick: Chapter 4 starring Keanu Reeves was fourth with $5m. Disney’s rerelease of Return of the Jedi took $4.8m in fifth place. In late May, the film will celebrate its 40th birthday.
