Joy Mba, a seasoned maritime expert with nearly two decades of experience, is revolutionizing the Nigerian maritime industry through innovative solutions and unwavering commitment to enhancing operational standards and sustainability.Mba’s journey into the maritime industry began with a profound passion for the sea and a desire to challenge stereotypes.

“I was inspired to break barriers,” she recalled. “As the first female admitted into the Nautical Science department and often the only woman aboard vessels, I saw an opportunity to make a difference.” With a strong foundation in Nautical Science, Mba embarked on a career marked by continuous learning and hands-on experience. She immersed herself in rigorous training as a deck officer and marine instructor, honing her technical skills and gaining a deep understanding of maritime operations.

As A Fellow of Nigeria Institute of Shipping (NIS), Mba has championed several initiatives aimed at addressing critical issues within the maritime sector. Her notable achievements include spearheading shipboard operations and maritime safety training, emphasizing the use of electronic navigation aids for enhanced safety and efficiency. “By integrating advanced technologies and promoting best practices, we ensure smoother operations and mitigate risks,” she affirmed.

Mba in her journey passionately advocates for comprehensive regulatory frameworks and infrastructure development to support the industry’s growth. “To thrive, we need streamlined procedures and upgraded ports,” she emphasized. “Government support through policy reforms and strategic investments is crucial to enhancing efficiency and competitiveness.” She noted.

Mba no doubt is committed to fostering growth and sustainability in the maritime industry through strategic actions. She stresses the importance of strengthening safety and environmental regulations to align with international standards, modernizing ports and improving transport connectivity, investing in maritime education and training, and promoting the adoption of advanced technologies for enhanced operational efficiency and safety.

Currently, Mba is working on publishing her book, “Enhancing Maritime Navigation Safety and Security in the Niger Delta,” a comprehensive guide aimed at improving maritime safety and security in the region. Through her dedication and innovative approach, Mba is driving positive change in the maritime industry. Her initiatives, not only enhance operational standards but also pave the way for inclusive growth and empowerment.

As a navigation officer, IMO-certified marine instructor, and personnel manager with a maritime security company, Mba’s expertise spans multiple facets of the industry. Her commitment to excellence and passion for positive change make her a trailblazer in Nigeria’s maritime industry.  Her greatest inate desire is to see more women in Africa come into the maritime space to make an impact just like she’s currently doing. She believes strongly that it’s only a matter of time before this desire becomes a reality.
