From Athlete to Entrepreneur: How Justin Murphy Built a Global Nutrition Movement

Published:

In the world of health and wellness, where fads come and go faster than a HIIT session, Justin Murphy, founder of iCoach Nutrition, has built something different—something lasting. His story is one of grit, faith, and relentless dedication to helping others reclaim their health and vitality, not through quick fixes but through sustainable, science-backed habits.

From Fitness Trainer to Nutrition Pioneer

Murphy’s journey began when he was just 18. A lifelong athlete, he started working as a personal trainer while pursuing a degree in nutrition. After nearly eight years of helping clients in the gym, he recognized a critical missing piece: nutrition.

“I got one hour with clients in the gym, but the other 23 hours determined their real results,” he recalls. “That’s when I realized nutrition was the missing link.”

So, after earning his degree, he took the leap to create iCoach Nutrition, a virtual coaching practice dedicated to transforming how people approach food, fitness, and overall health. Seven years later, it’s grown into a thriving global platform serving thousands of clients.

Betting on Himself—Against All Odds

Starting a business is rarely easy, and Murphy’s timing was anything but convenient. Just two days after quitting his “safe job,” he and his wife discovered they were expecting their first child.

“My back was against the wall,” he says. “I had no Plan B. I worked seven days a week, fifteen hours a day to make it succeed.”

That commitment paid off. Within a year, iCoach Nutrition was thriving, driven by Murphy’s all-in mentality and authentic connection to his clients’ struggles.

CrossFit Credibility and Early Momentum

Murphy’s credibility as a top 20 regional CrossFit athlete helped jumpstart his business. Competing at a high level gave him not only discipline but also visibility among performance-driven athletes who trusted him to optimize their nutrition.

“At that time, CrossFit was booming,” he explains. “Many of my clients were competitive athletes who wanted to take their performance to the next level. That overlap really helped the business grow early on.”

Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

When asked what advice he’d give to entrepreneurs starting out, Murphy doesn’t mince words: “Stop waiting for the perfect plan.”

He encourages young founders to take calculated leaps of faith. “It’s not about ready, aim, fire—it’s more like fire, aim, ready. Figure it out along the way. You’ll never have all the answers upfront.”

Murphy also urges entrepreneurs to make the jump when they’re young and agile: “Now that I have three boys, it’d be harder to take that same risk. But the hard things in life—the things truly worth having—always take work.”

Practicing What He Preaches

As a husband, father, and entrepreneur, Murphy embodies the balance he teaches his clients. His family homeschools their three boys, and between sports and business, their days are full—but intentional.

“That’s literally what we help clients do,” he says. “We teach busy parents how to prioritize their health without sacrificing family or career. Because when you’re healthy, you show up better in every part of life.”

His philosophy is clear: health is a superpower that elevates every other area—family, career, and purpose.

Faith, Family, and Fitness: The Pillars of His Future

Murphy’s priorities have evolved over time. Once focused on scaling a massive operation, he’s now more interested in balance and legacy.

“With kids, my perspective shifted. I have 18 years with these boys, and I want to make the most of it,” he says. “Could I work more and make more money? Sure. But I can’t get back this time.”

He continues to run iCoach Nutrition 100% online, serving clients globally while maintaining the freedom to coach his sons’ sports teams and spend quality time with his family. “My family is my first ministry,” Murphy says simply.

Tackling the Future of Weight Loss: Partnership with GLP-1 Clinics

In a space increasingly influenced by GLP-1 weight-loss medications like semaglutide, Murphy is finding innovative ways to blend technology and human coaching.

He and his team have partnered with doctors and clinics to provide one-on-one coaching for patients using these medications. “The drugs can help quiet the food noise,” he says, “but without strength training and proper nutrition, people risk losing muscle mass instead of fat.”

By coupling medical treatment with personalized nutrition guidance, Murphy believes they’re addressing the obesity epidemic in a way that’s both compassionate and effective.

The Legacy of iCoach Nutrition

After more than 15 years in the health and fitness industry, Justin Murphy has worked with thousands of clients around the world. Yet, his mission remains deeply personal.

“God has blessed me with the opportunity to help people live healthier, fuller lives,” he reflects. “At the end of the day, my faith, my family, and my fitness—that’s what matters most.”
