A construction and infrastructure expert, Jesutosin Obasa, has emphasized the critical role of effective project planning in ensuring the successful delivery of complex construction and infrastructure projects.
Speaking on the growing challenges within the sector, Obasa explained that project planning serves as the backbone of every successful project, particularly in industries where multiple teams, activities, and resources must operate in close coordination. According to him, a well-structured project plan provides a clear roadmap that guides stakeholders from project inception through completion, ensuring that responsibilities, timelines, and objectives are clearly understood.
Obasa noted that one of the most important contributions of project planning is the clear definition of project scope. He explained that when scope expectations are established early, it minimizes confusion, prevents scope creep, and reduces the likelihood of disputes among stakeholders. Clear scope definition, he added, helps align expectations and keeps all parties focused on agreed project outcomes.
The construction expert also highlighted the importance of realistic scheduling. By developing achievable timelines that account for task dependencies, resource availability, and potential delays, project teams are able to work more efficiently without the pressure of rushed execution. This approach, he said, significantly reduces disorganization and last-minute adjustments that often disrupt construction projects.
On resource management, Obasa stressed that effective planning enables proper allocation of labour, materials, equipment, and finances. He explained that identifying these requirements in advance helps prevent shortages, duplication of effort, and material waste, while ensuring subcontractors and supplies are available when needed to avoid costly downtime on site.
Risk management was another key area addressed. Obasa noted that construction projects are inherently exposed to uncertainties such as weather conditions, supply chain disruptions, and design modifications. Through proactive planning and early risk assessment, project teams are better positioned to respond effectively to challenges rather than reacting under pressure, thereby maintaining project momentum.
He further pointed out that effective project planning strengthens communication and coordination among stakeholders. Clear communication structures, regular planning meetings, and consistent progress updates help promote transparency, accountability, and collaboration across project teams.
Obasa concluded by emphasizing that project planning is a continuous process rather than a one-off exercise.
