Knowing a foreign language is a communication tool and an opportunity to realize one’s potential anywhere in the world. So how can language learning be made as effective and as close to real-life communication conditions as possible? This is precisely the question that the communicative language teaching method (CLT) addresses. We discussed with expert Gulnur Seitova how CLT works in practice and the benefits it offers students today.
CLT is based on the fundamental principle that language is, first and foremost, a means of communication. Beyond memorizing grammar rules, teachers prioritize getting their students to “talk”.
“The main goal of a teacher in CLT is to create an environment in which students actively use language to exchange information and solve communicative problems. This, in turn, changes the teacher’s role. We become facilitators of communication, supporting the learning process,” – explains Gulnur Seitova.
The teacher notes that the effectiveness of CLT depends on creating real-life language situations. For example, role-playing games, group discussions, projects, and case studies help students practice language in a context they understand and relate to. Even simple tasks, if they motivate students to engage in real-life communication, yield far more results than monotonous memorization of rules,” – our expert adds.
CLT places special emphasis on developing all skills simultaneously: speaking, listening, reading, and writing are integrated into a single learning process. According to the expert, this allows students to use the language as closely as possible to real-life situations.
Another important aspect is the individual approach to each individual. “Students sometimes come with different levels of preparation, goals, and motivations. CLT allows us to tailor assignments to the needs of the group, maintaining everyone’s engagement and interest. Students learn team communication, where everyone must be able to listen and be heard,” – explains Gulnur Seitova.
Furthermore, CLT actively integrates modern technologies. Online platforms, video conferencing, interactive assignments, and mobile apps make the learning process dynamic and engaging. Digital tools provide numerous opportunities for teachers to interact with students in a comfortable environment.
The expert also notes that CLT helps develop students’ motivation. They see the results of their learning, receive feedback, fully track their progress, and begin to enjoy the learning process.
“Students feel more at ease when they have support and understanding. They begin to use the language freely, without fear of making mistakes. And that’s a truly positive communicative outcome,” – Gulnur Seitova concludes.
In conclusion, CLT is a language teaching method that emphasizes communication. It’s impossible to demonstrate acquired knowledge without practical application in spoken language. It requires teachers to be creative and willing to partner with their students throughout the learning process. It’s through this approach that students learn to use English as a tool for interacting with the world on a daily basis.
