When nurse practitioners Brittany Delaney and Chrissy Akins left their corporate clinic jobs to start their own practice, they weren’t simply chasing independence—they were reshaping what modern healthcare could look like. Today, their company, Inicio Wellness, stands as a rising model for patient-centered, holistic medicine in a field long dominated by large corporate systems.
“If we could grow clinics for a corporation, we knew we could grow clinics for ourselves,” Akins recalls. “And in doing that, we could offer better patient care—because corporations really shouldn’t run medicine.”
A New Beginning, For Patients and Practitioners Alike
The name Inicio—Latin for “a new beginning”—captures the duo’s mission on two levels. It marks a personal leap from employees to entrepreneurs, and it symbolizes the fresh start they aim to provide for every patient who walks through their doors.
Rather than leaning solely on traditional Western approaches and pharmaceutical-heavy protocols, Inicio Wellness treats the patient as a whole, emphasizing holistic and functional medicine. The practice began as a telehealth experiment, slowly gained traction, and has since evolved into a thriving in-person clinic serving patients across Texas—with new operations launching in Utah.
Breaking Barriers and Building Momentum
Starting a clinic from scratch meant more than offering exceptional care; it required mastering the business side of healthcare—a challenge neither founder was trained for.

“There wasn’t a single class in nursing school about opening a practice,” Delaney notes.
They dove into research on business models, navigated Texas’s stringent regulations, and invested countless hours in grassroots marketing—networking with their local Chamber of Commerce and personally handing out business cards. Ultimately, what drove their growth was old-fashioned word-of-mouth: providing such attentive, compassionate care that patients couldn’t help but share their experiences.
“The most effective marketing is referrals,” says Akins. “When you truly listen, patients remember.”
Pivotal Partnerships and Entrepreneurial Mindsets
Two milestones stand out in their rise: joining the Chamber of Commerce, which helped amplify their visibility and confidence, and connecting with Dr. Amir Baluch, who became their supervising physician.
“We needed a physician on paper—but we gained a mentor,” says Akins. “He’s a seasoned entrepreneur, and his guidance has given us the confidence and resources to keep pushing forward.”
Advice for Aspiring Founders
For healthcare professionals dreaming of building their own practice, Delaney and Akins stress focusing on service before scale.
-
Prioritize trust over growth: “Your brand is the patient experience, not your logo.”
-
Outsource what you can: from billing to marketing, so you can focus on care.
-
Humanize your brand: share your personal story; patients choose people, not just clinics.
They’re candid that early days often felt slow, uncertain, and riddled with imposter syndrome—but consistency paid off.
Balancing Caregiver Hearts With CEO Demands
Running a healthcare business comes with unique emotional weight: unlike projects, patients can’t be put away at 5 p.m. Delaney and Akins combat burnout by outsourcing administrative burdens, hiring a virtual assistant, and—most importantly—leaning on each other.
“Just talking it through helps,” Delaney says. “There are growing pains, but seeing the good we’re doing makes it all worth it.”
Scaling With Purpose
Looking forward, Inicio Wellness plans to broaden its impact by:
-
Expanding across state lines, starting with Utah.
-
Offering new specialties and comprehensive, nationwide telehealth.
-
Becoming thought leaders through public speaking, mentorship, and education on ethical care.
They are also exploring cutting-edge collaborations—such as genotyping programs to personalize treatment plans and partnerships with InsideTracker to deepen wellness tracking.
A Blueprint for Healthcare’s Future
What began as two nurse practitioners daring to leave the corporate safety net is now a fast-growing, patient-first wellness brand. Their journey proves that healthcare can be both deeply human and successfully entrepreneurial—and that passion, paired with persistence, can transform not only careers, but communities.
